Ten (10) document cases Includes materials from Accessions 1996.043 and 1997.013. The St. Peter Claver Collection is divided into three series: Administrative Records, Financial Records, and School Records. Series I, ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS, consists of mostly newsletters and correspondence from the early 1990s. These materials are significant in that they reveal the activities of the St. Peter Claver Coalition as well as the struggles the parish community faced until its demise in 1994. Parishioners formed St. Peter Claver's Coalition in the summer of 1985 in order to maintain their church community after the Archdiocese officially suppressed the parish in June of that year. Although the St. Peter Claver Church received no financial support from the Archdiocese, it remained open and active due to the fact that the property was owned by the Holy Ghost Fathers, not the Archdiocese. Without the consent of the St. Peter Claver Community, the Holy Ghost Fathers closed the church in the summer of 1994 with the intention of establishing, in cooperation with the Archdiocese, a center for the Evangelization of African Americans. ADMINISTRATIVE RECORDS contains the materials maintained by Pattie J. Griffin, the Church Council Secretary and Archivist, from the time period of the Coalition's existence, 1985-1994. The correspondence, community newsletters, and church bulletins, organized chronologically, provide information regarding the suppression of the parish, the subsequent activities of the Coalition, the closing of the church, and finally, the opening of the Evangelization Center for African Americans. Along with correspondence, Griffin included related items such as announcements for organized protests and demonstrations, and newspaper clippings. Series II, FINANCIAL RECORDS, contains a relatively small amount of material. It includes parishioners' contributions and donations to the church, spanning the years 1966-1979, as well as monthly financial statements of St. Peter Claver's Coalition from about 1986 to 1988. Series III, SCHOOL RECORDS Bound volumes of student reports from St. Peter Claver School (closed 1984), spanning the years 1926-1982, form the bulk of Series III. The reports include information on students' attendance and grades. |
